HAZARDS OF SMOKING
Essay
It is realised by all that smoking is very harmful for health . Despite this know people go on smoking . A cigarette is consumer market . Its existence as a thing for sale is quite legal . During the past few years suicidal product . But it continues to sell in the the U.S. Advisory Committee on Smoking and Health has repeatedly drawn attention to the physical consequences of smoking . The 1989 report has concluded that smoking remains the most important preventable cause of death in our society . Such reports have made a great impact on the public attitude towards smoking . The percentage of smokers has fallen in Europe and the U.S.A. There is however a sad aspect of this story . The gain of the west has resulted in the loss of the Third World ( poor and developing countries ) . cent t The multinational tobacco companies have diverted their attention to the populations of the developing countries . For example , the prevalence of smoking in India has shown an upward trend . Today it ranges from 25 125 per to 80 per cent of the adult population in different areas . Out of an estimated five million deaths in the adult male population in this country , about one million can be attributed to to tobacco - related diseases . The hazards of smoking are multiple and vary from simple cough to fatal cancer Chronic bronchitis , with phlegm production and respiratory disability , afflicts between 10 and 20 per cent of the smokers . Respiratory failure resulting in death is common . A respiratory cripple is a great burden on the family , and society as a whole Heart disease and lung cancer are two important causes of death among the smokers and the relationship has been established beyond doubt . Smokers and tobacco chewers may also suffer from the cancer of the mouth , the jaw , the tongue , the stomach and the bladder . Smoking during pregnancy affects the baby in the womb . Parental smoking at home weakens the lung function of children who suffer from the increased incidence of pneumonia . This is a form of passive smoking by those who are non - smokers themselve but are exposed to the side - stream smoke of their parents or colleagues or companions 36 But it is a pity that smoking is not banned in our country which is poor . It is there because it was there . The complexity of economics including revenues and the interests of the tobacco trade are considered more important . But the fact remains that tobacco is a major cause of preventable diseases . The tobacco industry should be held accountable under the tort law . Even the public warning on a packet of cigarettes is mild , hidden and specious . The Indian legal system is liberal on tort claims . The liability of the Indian tobacco industry should be deemed to be greater because of the ignorance of an average Indian . He is neither well - informed nor adequately warned of the dangers of smoking . So the blame should not be totally passed on to the consumer . Government is doing a lot of propaganda on television about popularising various techniques in family planning . It should also come up with slides showing the hazards of smoking . Intensive propaganda on television about the harmful effects of smoking and passive smoking should be carried out . This will go a long way in driving home to the Indians the imperative need of discontinuing smoking . Smoking at all public places should be banned by law .
