The International English Language Testing System


The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) assesses English language proficiency across four key areas: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The test is available in two formats: Academic and General Training, each tailored to different purposes. The overall structure and content of the IELTS exam have remained consistent into 2024.


1. IELTS Listening Section


Format: Four recorded monologues and conversations.


Duration: Approximately 30 minutes, plus 10 minutes to transfer answers (paper-based test).


Number of Questions: 40


Content:


Section 1: A conversation between two people in an everyday social context.


Section 2: A monologue set in a social context.


Section 3: A conversation among up to four people in an educational or training context.


Section 4: A monologue on an academic subject.


Skills Assessed: Understanding of main ideas, specific factual information, opinions, attitudes, and the ability to follow the development of an argument.


2. IELTS Reading Section


Format: Three reading passages with a variety of question types.


Duration: 60 minutes


Number of Questions: 40


Content:


Academic Reading: Passages from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers, suitable for those entering university courses or seeking professional registration.


General Training Reading: Extracts from books, magazines, newspapers, notices, advertisements, company handbooks, and guidelines, focusing on everyday topics.


Skills Assessed: Reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading for detail, skimming, understanding logical argument, and recognizing writers' opinions, attitudes, and purpose.


3. IELTS Writing Section


Format: Two tasks requiring different styles of writing.

Duration: 60 minutes


Number of Tasks: 2


Content:


Academic Writing:


Task 1: Describe visual information (e.g., graph, table, chart, or diagram) in at least 150 words.


Task 2: Respond to a point of view, argument, or problem with a 250-word essay.


General Training Writing:


Task 1: Write a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal) based on a given situation in at least 150 words.


Task 2: Write a 250-word essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem.


Skills Assessed: Ability to organize ideas, use appropriate vocabulary and grammar, and accurately report data or express opinions.


4. IELTS Speaking Section.


Format: Face-to-face interview divided into three parts.


Duration: 11-14 minutes


Content:


Part 1: Introduction and interview on familiar topics (4-5 minutes).


Part 2: Long turn where the candidate speaks on a given topic for 1-2 minutes, with 1 minute to prepare (3-4 minutes).


Part 3: Two-way discussion thematically linked to Part 2 (4-5 minutes).


Skills Assessed: Ability to communicate opinions and information on everyday topics and common experiences, and to discuss more abstract ideas.


For comprehensive preparation, it's advisable to utilize official IELTS practice materials and consider enrolling in preparation courses. Familiarity with the test format and consistent practice can significantly enhance performance.
