Characters of the play
1. Dr. Andrew Manson
Newly qualified, takes a job as assistant to Dr. Page in a small mining town. On arrival, he finds to his surprise that Page is partly paralyzed and will never work again. This means Dr. Andrew Manson will have to do most of the clinic's work in this mining town at a meagre pay.
2. The Midwife
An experienced nurse to help in the birth of the child. The midwife and Andrew are contrasting personalities. The midwife is a foil to Andrew. She feels hopeless, resigned, helpless, fearful and untrained. On the other hand, Andrew proves to be more optimistic, diligent, efficient, self-sufficient, spontaneous and well-trained.
3. Joe Morgan
A well-built person in forties, lives in a small Welsh town of Blaenelly, works as a driller at the mines, he has been married for 20 years, but have not got any child so far.
4. Mrs. Morgan
Mrs. Morgan wife of Joe Morgan, is expecting her first child, Both her husband and her mother are feeling very nervous because the delivery of the child is going to be before time.
5. Christine
A school teacher, Andrew falls in love and contemplates marrying her.
6. Morgan's mother
A woman of nearly seventy. a tall, grey-haired

3. The outline story..... It was nearly midnight.. Dr. Andrew Manson found Joe Morgan waiting for him when he reached home.
4. The outline story..... Joe's wife was expecting a child after 20 years of their marriage. She needed immediate medical help.
5. The outline story..... Both of them set out for Morgan's house.. Mrs. Morgan's mother and the nurse stood beside the patient.
6. The outline story..... Andrew had to make a choice after the birth of the child - to save the child or perform his duty towards the child's mother to save her life too.
7. The outline story..... He gave the child to the nurse and turned his attention towards Susan Morgan.
8. The outline story..... Susan lay collapsed, almost pulseless... The doctor injected the medicine and after some frantic efforts, left her out of danger.
9. The outline story..... Then he asked for the child. The nurse felt no pulse, so she kept the baby amidst old newspapers. He was pulled out of the newspapers.
10. The outline story..... He was a boy, perfectly formed.. His body was white and soft.. The child was suffering from Asphyxia, the lack of oxygen in blood.
11. The outline story..... Andrew ordered for hot and cold water and two basins. He went on plunging the child now in icy cold water and then into steaming hot water.
12. The outline story..... Fifteen minutes passed. Nothing better happened. A sense of defeat pressed on Andrew.
13. The outline story..... However, he went on rubbing the child with a rough towel. He kept crushing and releasing the little chest with both of his hands.
14. The outline story..... A miracle took place. The child gave a short heave (push). He was gasping now deeper and deeper. His skin turned pink and then the child started crying.
15. The outline story..... Andrew gave the child to the nurse and came out of the room.
16. The outline story..... Outside stood Joe. He was highly relieved. Both the mother and the child were safe and sound.
